Fantail Report

Did you know that you can create a bond with the fantail by whistling (but it's like a kissing sound by puckering your lips together!)

Fantails eat fruit, insects and berries, but mostly eat insects. They are very good at catching insects in the air.

The fantails predators are cats, stoats, rats, and also mynas. They are the fantails enemies. Fantails can trick the predators by having lots of babies. Thats how they survive.

Fantails mostly live on forest edges and in scrub habitats. The fantails can been seen in town, in parks and gardens. They also can be found everywhere in New Zealand.

It is important to look after the fantails because we do not want the fantails to head into extinction while time goes by.

SCARY STORY

It was a hot summers day. Today was the day we were going caving in a gloomy cave around midday. The cave looked as if it were a mouth of a monster. As I entered the cave to find the richest diamond, I heard a tremendous roar as if someone was driving a bulldozer. But I still continued on and on. My heart was racing like a speeding bullet flying by. Time went by, I was going to give up until I saw a light. As I followed it I was getting all excited. Amazed as can be, valuing the beauty of the diamond I took it. Suddenly the cave was shaking like I had just activated a booby trap. I sprinted as fast as cheetah but I just made it out of the cave as the rocks closed up the cave. When I was back outside it was dark but because the diamond was shiny and bright I was able to see my way home.

The Haunted Graveyard

A long time ago it was a scary thundery night- a time I remembered the death of my friend Marcus. As I was looking at his grave I heard a whisper from behind and saw leaves coming towards me I looked back and I saw a bloody chopped off finger that was all slimy. I tried to run to the door as it shut on its own. I tried to jump the fence then I fell down! I heard the sound of a police car and I saw its lights - blue and red - I was saved. I never went near the graveyard again!

The Devils Rock

One day after school Jone ran to the mango tree by the path. He waved to his best friend Pita. "Pita! Come!" he shouted. "I want to show you something." Pita ran to the mango tree. There was a hill in front of the boys. Jone pointed at a large rock on the hill. "Look at that big rock" said Jone. "Thats Devils Rock, my brother believes that a devil lives inside the rock! At night it comes out. It is a Dangerous place" Do you believe that there's a devil" asked Pita. "Yes, I do" said Jone. "I think there's a devil." "Don't be foolish" said Pita and laughed "I don't believe that a devil lives there! Your brother is wrong." "I know he's wrong" shouted Pita "Last week I walked along this path at night but I didn't see anything!" "I've got an idea, lets go to Devils Rock tonight to see if there is a devil." "If I see a devil I will believe there is a devil inside there. The next morning both of the boys were dead.

Did you know this popular song bird is one of our prettiest birds with its metallic blue green coat and its white neckpiece?

Like bellbirds and hihi, the tui is a nectar feeder. As well as drinking nectar, the tui snacks on insects and fruit.

Tui are common around New Zealand, even in cities. They often found around food plants like the kowhai, flax, ngaio and kaka beak. If you want to attract tui's to your garden you should grow these plants! Male tui can often be seen chasing bell birds and silvereyes from their territory.

I think we should look after the tui because it is New Zealands song bird.

Rugby League Open Boys Under 13

On the 12th of August the open weight rugby league team went to Manurewa Marlins rugby club for our tournament. First of we versed Finlayson Park and we beat them 28-12. We were happy when we won. Then we versed Te Matauranga and we beat them 44-4. We went easy hahahaha =P. Then after that we had lunch and then got ready for the game against The Gardens. I had a sore arm! We went easy on the The Gardens and we won 44-0. This meant we got to the semi finals and we were versing Clayton Park. Guess what - we won 25-12, it was a very hard game but we still won. Then the biggest game of the day, THE FINALS! Well in the finals we versed Wiri Central we won the biggest game of the day, all the boys were happy and proud of ourselves. We all had fun and thats the main thing.

Did you know that the Hoiho is a flightless bird with waterproof feathers? Hoiho are from one of the most ancient families of birds.

There are 16 species of penguins and they are all found in the southern hemisphere. The three species in New Zealand are the Yellow Eyed Penguin, the Fiorland Creasted Penguin and the Little Blue Penguin.

Hoiho are the fourth largest penguin in the world, it grows up to 65 cm tall and weighs 5 to 6 kg. They have short stubby flippers, dense waterproof feathers and bright pink feet.

The Yellow Eyed Penguins eat fish. When the eggs hatch one parent goes fishing while the other one looks looks after the chicks. When they come back the hungry chicks then thrust their beaks into the parents mouth for the food.

I think New Zealanders shouldn't hunt Hoiho because there won't be many left.

Will the hoiho be extinct in a couple of years? The hoiho is one of the largest penguins in the world. Penguins can't fly so this means that they can't get to their babies if they getting attacked by predators like dogs, cats, stoats and people.

The hoiho has a bright yellow stripe that goes around the back of it's head and goes around to it's eyes. The hoiho also has bright pink feet. They weigh 4 to 5 kilograms and grow up to 65cm's tall.

Most of the yellow eyed penguins live in Southern Hemisphere. Only some species live on mainland New Zealand. These include the the fiorland crested penguin and also the Hoiho.

The hohio eat fish. Some times one of the baby hohio's parents go fishing and the other penguin looks after the baby hoiho. The baby hoiho eat the food out of their parents mouth.

I believe we should save the Hoiho because there will be no more left if we don't!

They have been on earth for 60 million years. Only three species breed on New Zealand, the little blue penguin, the Fiordland chested penguin and the yellow eyed penguin, also known as Hoiho.

The yellow eyed penguin are flightless birds with short flippers, waterproof feathers and a sleek shape. These penguins are the fourth largest penguins in the world. Hoiho grow up to 65 cm in height and weigh between 5 to 6 kg. The yellowed eyed penguin has a bright yellow stripe that goes around the back of its head. They also have pink feet.

These species (the yellowed eyed penguin) live in the Southern Hemisphere, in the Antarctic sea and are found around New Zealand .

The Hoiho eat fish. When the eggs hatch one of the parents would go off into the sea to find food. When the fisher comes back, the parents would greet each other and the hungry chicks would then eat the food.

The yellow eyed penguin are a threatened species but people are now helping them, so make sure that you help them too! This means the Hoiho will survive well onto the future.
